Flex 2002 News:
Various Prescription Drugs to Be Actively Managed by
Merck-Medco
To ensure that certain medications are prescribed and utilized
appropriately, Merck will adopt
Merck-Medco’s Managed Rx Program for the following medications:
- Sleep aids and
hypnotic medications—for example, Ambien®, Sonata®,
etc.;
- Two pain relief
medications—Toradol® and Stadol NS®;
and
- Male erectile
dysfunction medications—for example, Viagra®, Muse®,
Edex®, Caverject®, etc.
As a result, when any
of these medications is prescribed, Merck-Medco may contact the prescribing
physician and/or pharmacist to ensure that the drug is being used in a clinically-appropriate
way. And, Merck-Medco may offer recommendations and place limits on current
and future prescriptions of these medications.
For example, under the
Merck-Medco Managed Rx Program, prescriptions for Viagra®,
the male erectile dysfunction medication, will be limited to 12 tablets
per month, will only be covered for males over the age
of 18—and will be available by mail or online through Merck-Medco’s Home
Delivery Pharmacy service.
